An Open Letter to College Freshmen about Media Literacy

Dear College Freshmen,

As you embark in this college journey, be prepare to question all the information that you see online. As a future communicator, you need to start cultivating the habit of questioning every source of information that comes your way.

The journalism motto is “If your mother says she loves you, check it out”

It is crucial that before you share any information, whether it be through the internet or through conversation, that you know where the information came from and it’s validity. This is important because now is when you start to build your credibility.

In the world we are now, where anyone can be a journalist and share information it is crucial to have great media literacy skills. With all the different platforms to access media, you need to be able to analyse, create and share media that is truthful and objective.

Yes, this might mean more work and research, but in the end it will be all worth it.
